In some fun casting, the new series of movies in the "Harry Potter" universe has cast its new Albus Dumbledore. CNN reports that Jude Law will play Dumbledore in the sequel to "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," the second in the new franchise of prequels to the world of the Boy Wizard. Dumbledore is supposed to play a strong role in the upcoming movies.

Dumbledore in this new world

In the "Harry Potter" movies themselves, two different people played Albus Dumbledore. Richard Harris played Dumbledore in the first two movies but passed away in 2002.

Michael Gambon took on the role and played him through the final movie in that first franchise. Jude Law will now be the third actor to play Dumbledore, albeit almost a century before he appeared in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." While he would become the Headmaster of Hogwarts years later, he appears in the new "Fantastic Beasts" movie as the Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts.

Much like later movies, Dumbledore sees the inherent good in people while his contemporary in these new movies, Gellert Grindelwald, hates normal humans (Muggles) and feels all wizards are superior to them. While Colin Farrell played Grindelwald in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," at the end of the movie he morphed into Johnny Depp, who will continue to play Grindelwald in future movies as the nemesis of Dumbledore.

Jude Law in the 'Harry Potter' world

While "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" brought the action to America and showed how the wizards in the young United States dealt with their existence, the introduction of Dumbledore and Hogwarts in a major role clearly means that things are moving back overseas to the U.K. There is also the controversial decision to clearly bring Dumbledore out of the closet.

While it wasn't that much of a secret that Dumbledore was gay in the original movies, the new series will make sure to solidify that part of his character, something that Jude Law has proven over the years that he is easily capable of pulling off. The actual synopsis and theme of the new movies (especially since Grindelwald was captured and arrested at the end of the first one) remain under wraps.

What is known is that there will be a total of five movies in the "Fantastic Beasts" series and that the second movie will hit theaters in November 2018. Eddie Redmayne is set to return to the series in his role as Newt Scamander.
